Baltimoron Orioles 1B Rafael Palmeiro was suspended for 10 days after testing positive for steroids by Major League Baseball.
In the Congressional hearings on steroids in sports last March Palmeiro emphatically stated he has never used steroids - this after being accused of steroid abuse by former Rangers teammate Jose Canseco. His spin on being caught was that he didn't know he was taking steroids - the same song sung by Barry Bonds, who was ratted out earlier this year for juicing up. While Bonds took steroids to increase muscle mass, Palmeiro's need for juice may be simply to speed healing and stay in the line-up. Steroids were originally meant for assisting in the healing process. Athlete-junkheads found out how they could rapidly increase strength and the rest is fractured home run history.
We'll see how his endorsement deal with Viagra works out now that Palmeiro has been caught using a performance enhancing substance for his bat and balls. Viagra may have wanted an exclusive deal.
HFN says ban Palmeiro and Bonds and the other steroidistas for life - a ten day suspension doesn't send much of a message. And, as far as HFN is concerned, the single season home run record is still held by Roger Maris.
